Carton Council Partners with SARCAN, Return-It to Support Carton Recycling Awareness
Caron Council is always pleased to partner with businesses and other community organizations committed to raising awareness of carton recycling and encouraging great recycling habits. Two recent programs supported by CCC were successful in achieving both those goals.
SARCAN: In February 2023, SARCAN ran their second Unusual Suspects social media contest, challenging residents of Saskatchewan to return cartons, including juice boxes and dairy- and non-dairy beverage containers. For every “Suspect” someone tagged on social media, they were entered for a chance to win one of three cash prizes up to $1,000.
This year, SARCAN had a total of 88 individual and 5 school entries and the contest had a total social media reach of more than 127,000. SARCAN also reported a combined year-over-year increase in carton returns in February, which in part may be attributable to the success of the campaign.
Return-It: To help increase awareness of recycling refundable cartons and how to properly recycle them among British Columbians, Return-It ran a #RecycleBeverageCartons contest during March 2023.
The campaign asked adults to share their drawing of any refundable beverage carton, adding “push the straws in” or “keep the caps on” and tagging @RecycleCartonsCA and Return-It on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter with the contest hashtag #RecycleBeverageCartons. The contest generated more than 740 visits to the campaign’s landing page and a total of 34 submissions. Twenty winners randomly drawn from the submissions received a $100 gift card.
